Phone Tripod Mount Buying Guide: Clamp Widths and Ball Head Stability

Buy a phone tripod mount by its clamp width range first and its height or price second. If the clamp cannot open wide enough for your phone in its case, nothing else on the spec sheet matters.

Measure your phone with the case on, across the short side. Then pick a clamp whose published range puts that number in the middle, not at the edge.

Clamp width range decides whether your phone fits

Manufacturers publish clamp ranges in millimeters or inches, and the spread is wider than you might expect. The Manfrotto Universal Smartphone Clamp tops out at 8.4 cm, while the Manfrotto PIXI Clamp opens to 104 mm.

A rugged case can push a large phone past the smaller clamps. Width figures on phone spec pages, like the ones in this Pixel 6 vs Galaxy S21 comparison, are for the bare handset, so add the case thickness on both sides.

Ball head stability is mostly about the lock

Few phone mount spec sheets quantify ball head stability, and none in the table above give a torque or holding figure. What you can check is the lock: a separate tightening knob holds better than a friction-only joint.

Stability also drops as you add weight above the ball. A phone, a case and a cold shoe mic shift the center of gravity, and a loose ball head lets the rig droop slowly during a long video.

Where a load rating exists, treat it as the ceiling for everything on the mount. SmallRig and JOBY both state 500 g, which leaves headroom for a phone plus a small light.

Portrait, landscape and the 1/4 inch thread

Almost every mount here uses the standard 1/4-20 thread, so it fits most camera tripods and selfie sticks. A second thread on the side lets you switch to portrait without tilting the ball head 90 degrees.

That second thread matters for vertical video. Tilting the ball head sideways puts the whole load on the lock, which is where cheap heads slip.

Check the phone before you blame the mount

A clamp pressing on the side buttons can trigger the volume rocker or lock the screen mid-recording. Slide the phone so the jaws sit clear of the buttons.

Long recordings also heat the phone, which can slow it down. Closing background apps, as covered in this guide to iPhone and iPad performance, helps on long shoots.

If touch input stops responding while the phone is clamped, remove it and test again before blaming the mount. Pressure on the frame and heat are two causes worth ruling out, along with the others in this unresponsive phone screen guide.

Your short list: a clamp range that brackets your cased phone, a published load rating, a locking knob on the ball head, and a side thread for portrait shots.

Questions people ask about phone tripod mount

How wide should a phone tripod mount clamp open?

Wide enough that your phone with its case sits in the middle of the published range. Ranges vary, from 8.4 cm maximum on the Manfrotto Universal Smartphone Clamp to 104 mm on the Manfrotto PIXI Clamp.

Will a phone tripod mount hold my phone with a case on?

It will if the cased width is inside the clamp range. Measure the short side of the phone with the case fitted, then compare it with the manufacturer figure rather than the phone's bare width.

Can a phone tripod mount carry a microphone or light too?

Many have a cold shoe for that. Check the load rating where one is published, such as 500 g for the SmallRig Metal Phone Holder 4382, and keep the phone plus accessories under it.
