The AirPods Max 2 changes the chip and very little else. Apple moved from the H1 to the H2, added a new high dynamic range amplifier, and switched on the software features the H2 makes possible. The aluminum cups, the mesh canopy, the Digital Crown and the price all stayed where they were.
If you own the 2024 USB-C model and like it, the upgrade is thin. If you are coming from the 2020 original or from a rival brand, the case is stronger. This review uses Apple’s own published figures, since we have not put the headphones through a lab.
What Apple says is new
Apple’s announcement on 16 March 2026 leads with up to 1.5 times more effective active noise cancellation than the previous generation. That is a manufacturer figure measured against Apple’s own baseline, so treat it as a direction rather than a lab result.
The H2 also brings Adaptive Audio, which blends noise cancellation and Transparency on its own, and Conversation Awareness, which lowers volume when you start talking to someone. Voice Isolation cleans up calls. Live Translation arrives too, but it needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone running iOS 26 or later.
Smaller additions include Loud Sound Reduction, Personalized Volume, Siri head gestures and a camera shutter on the Digital Crown. All of them have been on AirPods Pro for a while; the Max is catching up.
What did not change
The battery is still rated at up to 20 hours with noise cancellation on, per Apple. The headband, the ear cushions and the folding-flat design carry over, and the box still ships with the thin Smart Case that owners have argued about since 2020. iFixit’s teardown, reported by AppleInsider in April, found the internals effectively identical to the 2020 and 2024 units apart from the H2 board. Same battery, same drivers, same buttons, and still no self-service repair parts. Condensation inside the cups after long sessions has not been engineered away.
Lossless over USB-C is not a reason to upgrade
Apple lists 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio over the included USB-C cable, plus lower wireless latency for gaming. The 2024 USB-C AirPods Max gained the same wired lossless mode through a firmware update in 2025, so the two generations match here.
Plugged into a Mac running Logic Pro, you also get Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking. That wired desk setup sits naturally next to a mechanical keyboard for Mac on the same USB-C hub.
Price and who should buy
The street price is $549, unchanged from both earlier generations. Colors are midnight, starlight, orange, purple and blue.
Buy if you own the 2020 model with a tired battery, or if you want Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness in an over-ear format inside the Apple ecosystem. Skip if you own the 2024 USB-C version. Its H1 already handles Spatial Audio, wired lossless and the same 20 hours, so the ANC gain is the only thing you would be paying for.
