The right monitor arm desk mount is the one whose rated weight range brackets your monitor with its stand removed, whose VESA plate matches the holes on the back of the panel, and whose clamp fits your desk edge. Get those three right and a 32 inch screen holds its position for years.
Rated weight range, not just the maximum
Gas spring arms have a minimum weight as well as a maximum. The Ergotron LX is rated for 7 to 25 lbs (3.2 to 11.3 kg) by manufacturer figures. Hang a 5 lb panel on it and the spring wins, so the screen drifts upward.
Ergotron also notes that on the LX, monitors over 20 lbs lose up to 4.5 inches of vertical travel, so a screen near the top of a range behaves worse than one in the middle.

VESA sizes and what the letters mean
VESA’s Flat Display Mounting Interface standard sorts monitors into three classes. MIS-D covers the 75 x 75 mm and 100 x 100 mm patterns found on almost every desktop monitor up to 30.8 lbs (14 kg). MIS-E is the 200 x 100 mm rectangle on some mid-size displays, rated to 50 lbs, and MIS-F starts at 200 x 200 mm for TVs and heavy panels.
Most desk arms ship with a MIS-D plate only. For a 43 inch display or a small TV, treat it like a TV soundbar mount: measure the hole spacing in millimetres and match it to the arm’s spec sheet, or budget for an adapter plate.
Clamp versus grommet
A C-clamp grips the rear edge of the desk. It needs a flat lip within the arm’s thickness range, 10 to 60 mm on the LX, and fails on desks with a modesty panel, a rounded edge or a drawer under the mounting point.
A grommet mount bolts through a hole in the desktop. The LX fitting accepts holes 8 to 50 mm wide in tops up to 57 mm thick. It is steadier for heavy arms because the load passes straight down instead of levering on the edge.
Ergotron ships both fittings with the LX and the Ergotron HX, and VIVO includes both with the STAND-V001. Some budget arms sell the grommet bracket separately.

Laptops, dual screens and desk depth
An arm earns its price when the monitor shares the desk with a laptop. Floating the screen above a notebook like the IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook lets the smaller display sit beneath the larger one instead of fighting it for width.
Two screens on one clamp double the load, so add both panel weights before comparing against the arm’s range. The display is one block in the block diagram of a computer, and the only one you hang off furniture.
Four numbers to check before you order
- Monitor weight without its stand, from the manufacturer’s spec page.
- VESA hole pattern in millimetres, measured or from the same page.
- Desk edge thickness, with a flat rear lip and nothing bolted under it.
- The arm’s rated range, with your monitor sitting in the middle third of it.
If the desk fails the third check, drill the hole and use the grommet fitting.
